For goal-time marathon and half marathon runners

Pace the course, not just the clock.

Enter your goal time and the course’s elevation. Get mile-by-mile splits that spend the same effort on every climb and descent, and still land on your goal.

Goal time in. Mile-by-mile plan out.

Even splits are a trap on a hilly course.

Hold 8:24 up a long climb and you pay for it in the last three miles. Run the descent easy and you give the time away. Even effort beats even pace, but only if you know how much to slow down and speed up on each mile.

~3%
slower for every 1% of uphill grade
~1.5%
faster for every 1% of downhill, about half of what the climb costs

How it works

From goal time to race-day splits in three steps

  1. Enter your goal and distance

Pick miles or kilometers, choose a race distance and type the finish time you are chasing. Add a negative split if that is your plan.

  2. Add the course elevations

Paste the elevation at each marker from the race’s course map, or pick a profile: flat, rolling, hilly, net downhill or a big climb late.

  3. Get your splits and take them with you

See your pace for every split, with the pace chart and elevation profile beside it. Copy the splits or print them for race morning.

What’s inside

Everything you need to run the hills on purpose

  • Even-effort splits

Slower up, faster down, and the same effort all the way. Every split is adjusted for its own grade.

  • Miles or kilometers

Plan in the units your race uses and flip between them in one tap.

  • Elevation chart

A pace chart and a course profile side by side, colored for uphill, flat and downhill, so you see where the race is won or lost.

  • Negative split strategies

Hold even effort, or ease into a slight or strong negative split. The plan still lands on your goal time.

  • Copy your splits

One tap copies the full table to paste into your notes, a wristband template or a message to your pacer. Print it if you like paper.

  • Ready-made course profiles

No elevation data yet? Start from flat, rolling, hilly, net downhill or a big climb late, then enter your own numbers when you have them.

Questions

Good questions before race day

How does it keep my effort even on hills?

Hills cost roughly 3% of your pace for every 1% of uphill grade, and downhills give back about half of that. The planner applies that rule to every split, then scales the whole plan so the splits still add up to your goal time. You run slower on the climbs, faster on the descents, and spend the same effort throughout.

Will the splits really add up to my goal time?

Yes. The plan is built backwards from your goal, so the split times and the finishing clock match the time you entered. Real courses vary with surface, wind and heat, so treat it as a starting plan and adjust on the day.

Where do I get the course elevations?

Most race websites publish a course map with an elevation profile, and any GPS file or mapping tool will give you the elevation at each marker. Type them in as a comma-separated list, one value per mile or kilometer. Don’t have them yet? Pick a ready-made profile (flat, rolling, hilly, net downhill or a big climb late) and refine it later.

Does it work in kilometers, and for other distances?

Yes. Switch between miles and kilometers at any time. Choose a 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon, or enter any custom distance.

Can I plan a negative split?

Yes. Choose even effort, a slight negative split or a strong negative split, and the plan shifts effort toward the second half while still landing on your goal time.

What does $3.00 get me, and how do I open the planner?

One payment of $3.00, no subscription. After checkout, sign in with your Whop account and the planner is unlocked for you. Use it for every race you run. Come back any time with the “Open the planner” link on this page.
